DO NOT RE-ADMIT (DNR) STATUS
Q: What is “DNR?”
A: “DNR” stands for Do Not Readmit.
Section 8 applicants who previously participated in Section 8 or any other
public housing program and left the program owing money are classified as “DNR.”
This means they cannot be readmitted to Section 8, or to any other public
housing program until they repay full amount they owe.
Q: How do I get off the DNR status?
A: If you owe a housing authority money, you must
pay it back. HUD requires that any outstanding debts to any public housing
agency be paid in full before you may be considered for Section 8.
Q: How much time am I given to pay back the
Housing Authority before my Section 8 application is withdrawn?
A: If you owe the Housing Authority, you must pay
back the full amount within 30 days. The Housing Authority does not set up
installment plans. If you do not repay the full amount within 30 days,
your application will be withdrawn.
Q: If my Section 8 application is withdrawn
because I don’t have the money to pay back the full amount, can I apply for
Section 8 at a later time?
A: Yes. You can call the Housing
Authority’s Section 8 Registration line [1 (800) 555-4501] and re-register
immediately. However, you will be placed on the bottom of the waiting
list, and when you are called for an eligibility interview, you must have the
money to pay back the Housing Authority or your application will be withdrawn
again.
Q: When I pay back the money, do I get my
Section 8 automatically since I qualified before?
A: No. Full repayment of the amount owed does
not guarantee that you will be re-admitted to the program. Applicants for
re-admittance must still meet all HUD eligibility requirements and will be
treated like any new applicant.
